[f038v]persons of ye. first character & meritamong the Ministers of our Church inAmerica with the Degree of Doctor inDivinity. I have been more than onceapplied to from thence to recommendpersons, not unworthy of that honour, tothe University. I have always excusedmyself, for ye. reason above given; tha[t]I might not in the least appear toassume an influence & authority towhich I have really no claim.I wish to be understood to interestmyself much in your success; & shallbe glad to apply to any Friend, whoYou may think can do You service;as I would very readily apply to Dr. Fo::thergill in that capacity; I beg onlyto be excused making myself the firstmover in this affair to the Vice-Chancello[r.] My opinion, in regard to ye. best me::thod of proceeding in your case, I shallvery freely give You. As I understandby Your Letter, that the Warden of[f039r]Wadham College approves of the design,I think, he will have no objection to ye.proposing of it to ye. Vice-Chancellor; &I have no doubt of his being the pro::per person to do it, as in these casesit is commonly done by the Head of theCollege to which the person proposedbelongs.I spoke to the Warden of Merton in your behalf, together with theRector of Exeter. Be so good as to favour me with notice, when thematter has been approved by the Vice-Chancellor. I will then write to theWarden of New College; & am atYour service in any other way, thatYou shall be pleased to point out tome.I will not trouble You with anyApology for explaicning myself thusfreely to You: & I hope You will do
